Igor Markovich Maistrovsky was born on April 14th,1950, in Tver (Kalinin, at the time), in Russia.

He graduated the highly prestigious Moscow Higher School of Art and Industrial Design, (the former Stroganov Academy of Arts), in 1974.

Igor Maistrovsky was internationally recognized for his work in poster design and for his paintings, while pioneering the new wave of graphic design in the USSR in the early 80s. He was the creator of over 300 published posters for film, theatre and circus, three of which were selected for the prestigious “The World’s 100 best posters” exhibition in Moscow.

In 1990 he was selected to be part of 12 international artists, chosen to participate in the UNESCO sponsored project, that manifested a wall calendar under the motto “Paper Unites” and a panel for the UNESCO building in Paris.

Remarkably, Igot Maistrovsky’s work was included in “Who is who in Graphic Design”, a prestigious international reference book of the best prominent contemporary artists, and in the remarkable book “Russian Poster of the 20th century”, published in 2004.

The artist has been a participant of more than 100 exhibitions throughout the world in Russia, France, Holland, Poland, the former Czechoslovakia, Italy, Japan, USA, Israel, Germany, Portugal and Canada.

Igor Maistrovsky’s art is presently part of different museum collections of Poland, USA, UK, Holland, Finland as well as in numerous private collections around the world.

His works can be found in the permanent collections of the following prestigious cultural institutions:

  • The State Tretyakov Gallery in Russia

  • Musee de Publicité in Paris

  • Stedlijk Museum in Amsterdam

  • Museum of Posters in Japan

  • UNESCO

  • The Russian ART Foundation

In 2015, After a 12-year long battle with Leukaemia, Igor Maistrovsky passed away in his home, in Rawdon, Canada. He is survived by his wife, Olga Lipskaia, who served as his manager and muse for over 20 years, and his daughter, Sasha.
